Fourth of July celebrations on Folly Beach left beer cans, cups and styrofoam coolers all along the beach. Now some people are calling for a ban on alcohol on Folly Beach. Mayor Carl Beckmann told news 2’s Nate Stewart today, that while he is not behind a ban on alcohol to prevent littering, he did say that other council members are.

‘Ddo you want to impose a ban on alcohol? Personally no, cause like i said that is going to infringe on the rights of the citizens of Folly, if you have a ban on alcohol that effects everybody.“

July 28th is the next scheduled council meeting on Folly. Mayor Beckmann said that the council will bring up a possible alcohol ban, as well as a possible fine increase for littering.

Talks of the ban started after the Forth of July weekend and residents complaining about the mounds of trash around tenth street on Folly Beach. The Mayor had strong words for those doing the littering.

“The people who did this don’t live in this state not only that - care nothing for the beaches here, so those people i would say dont ever come back. I don’t need you, you don’t bring anything here anyway except trash and traffic.“

*****EXTRA POINT*****

On July 5, 2009 the Charleston Waterkeeper, the Charleston Explorer and a handful of committed and patriotic individuals removed over 1,000 pounds of trash off of Morris Island. The litter was a result of 4th of July festivities on the island the day before. A video of that can be Seen on youtube here

Should alcohol be banned on Folly Beach to stop littering?

Should fines be increased for those doing the littering?

Or should officials step up patrols to punish those doing the littering?

Folly Beach Mayor Carl Beckmann is considering a possible ban on alcohol after the beach was littered with trash from the Fourth’s festivities. Monday he and other city officials and residents were shocked at the massive amount of beer-related trash left on the beach and beside roads and in people’s yards, over the weekend.

Folly is the area’s only beach that allows alcohol consumption, in cups but not in cans or bottles, on the sand. Now that could all change after what happened on the Fourth of July

News two’s Nate Stewart is talking with the Mayor later this afternoon.

Should there should be a ban on alcohol on Folly Beach? Or should officials try and crack down on those responsible?

In the mayors defense, he also blamed numerous school's fraternities (at Clemson, Carolina, and CofC)that were not mentioned. I have heard of a few organizations getting together a litter pick up in the next couple of days. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. The mayor is calling this a "hot button issue"

I have been to Folly Beach and i liked beign their i must say that is a nice beach if people can't respect the law of littering then i think they should be banned from going to folly beach or any other beach because all they want to do is sit on the beach and get drunk and not realize what they are doing is Illeagal and if the person or people who are caught littering then i feel like they should be banned from ever going to any of the beaches.if it's teenagers doing this then they should also be banned as well.

Banning alcohol is not the answer. That's cutting your nose off to spite your face. If a area looks trashy to begin with, people usually don't care. But when you clean up the area including the city of Folly Beach, and step up patrols with stiff fines that stick, you would be surprise how clean you can keep it. That's my two cents worth.

The Mayor of Folly Beach is a moron. I am not saying what these people did is right but, why not have extra trash barrels and dumpsters out at Folly during the summer time? I watched his interview on the news tonight and he said he doesn't want these people from other states out at Folly. Well, if these people from other states didn't go to Folly and support the bars, restaurants, and stores then it would pretty hard for these places to stay open. I have never been or never would go to Folly but, maybe a little bit of common sense would solve this problem.

The Folly Beach Mayor blaming "out of state'ers" for the litter on the beach is ridiculous. All you have to do is look around town, 365, and you see litter everywhere. The lack of self-respect is rampant, as is demonstrated by the education and crime statistics.

Yes alcohol should be banned on Folly Beach in any type of container. The beach is places were families go to have fun and should not have to worry about some dumb drunk starting something. Also the people living along the beech should not have to worry about cleaning up after them, also is it really a good idea to allow alcohol to be drank around the water for if they get into the water they could find themselves in trouble and a lifeguard would have to risk their life to go out and bring them in, not to mention the risk to other swimmers around them. YES ALCOHOL SHOULD BE BANNED AT FOLLY BEACH!!!!!!

So now you have to have it in a "cup." So you have cans, bottles and cups to pick up. Make the law "Cans Only," (like it was) then the trash is all cans, and some one will pick them for the aluminum value. Please tell the Mayor that.
