The FBI just sent News 2 a letter asking for your help in finding the person or persons responsible for sending more than 50 threatening letters to financial institutions across the country.  I’m attaching the letter below;

Federal Bureau of Investigation
Columbia, South Carolina

Press Notice

Hello and Good Morning:

      The following is a statement from our National Press Office.  It is being asked that we get this out within our local media, with some home of getting tips that will help.  Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

“Since Monday, more than 50 threatening letters have been received at financial institutions in at least 11 states.  Today, the FBI posted one of the letters and envelopes on the web, http://www.fbi.gov  The FBI’s WMD Directorate and FBI field offices along with US Postal Inspectors and state and local authorities are investigating each of these incidents.  FBI and USPIS personnel around the country are following up on numerous leads.  Operationally, the decision was made to post the letters so that people reading the letter may who recognize the style of writing will notify law enforcement in order to provide assistance in the investigation.  The USPIS has offered a $100,000 reward in this case.

These letters require a law enforcement response from the FBI, USPIS, local police and fire departments and are a drain on resources.  Most of the threat letters contained a powder substance.  Field tests on the powder have been negative.  Testing continues at regional laboratories.  Sending a hoax letter is a serious crime and law enforcement will continue to work to identify and arrest those responsible.  The FBI and our law enforcement partners are following up on numerous leads and if anyone has information they are requested to contact the FBI, USPIS or local authorities.  You can call 1800-CALL-FBI or go to http://www.fbi.gov to submit a tip.”
