DEVELOPING STORY: MUSC plans layoffs and furloughs to deal with budget cuts
Published: November 24, 2008
The Medical University of South Carolina will use four-day furloughs and layoffs to deal with $17 million in state budget cuts. MUSC President Dr. Ray Greenberg said in a video posted on the university’s Web site Monday that furloughs will start after the holidays.
He said the layoffs would affect just “a handful” of workers, most of whom are temporary.
Greenberg has said he plans to take a pay cut and will take eight days off without pay. He says at least 140 people have volunteered to take pay cuts or furloughs.
The cuts will not affect those working in the research and clinical areas of the university.
Last month, state lawmakers cut $123 million in funding for public universities and technical colleges to help balance the state budget.
