Deputy Death: seeking death penalty

14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone announced Monday that he will seek the death penalty in the murder of Colleton County deputy Dennis Compton.

18-year-old Jacoby Fields of Walterboro and 19-year-old Travis Harris of Smoaks are accused to killing Compton in August of 2008.

The 39-year-old deputy was responding to a home alarm when he was shot to death.

Compton family members say Monday’s court session was highly emotional. Compton’s mother saw the two young men accused of killing her son for the first time.

Compton’s cousin, Cpl. Anthony Buchanan, is relieved to see the push for the death penalty and says there should be more such cases.

Buchanan called Compton a “gentle giant” who is still missed. He says the death penalty will not bring his cousin back, but wants to see justice served.

Travis Harris’ family tearfully hugged each other outside the Colleton County Courthouse. Harris plead not guilty and asked for a jury trial.

Harris’ attorney petitioned to be released from the case and was granted that release. A new defense attorney will be assigned.

The paperwork is being processed for the death penalty trial.  The prosecution must wait for a judge to be assigned.

Compton is survived by his wife and four children.
