Charleston’s own Darius Rucker won the Country Music Associations award for best new artist Wednesday night.
This award marked only the second time an African-American artist has been a winner at the CMA’s.
Rucker has now sold over 1 million copies of his debut country album, “Learn to Live.”
“What a year,“ said an elated Rucker. “First of all, to the fans, thank you all for accepting me, and I think most importantly, to country radio, you took a chance on a pop singer from Charleston, South Carolina. Thank you so much for that!“
