Cold days work in the Lowcountry

Frigid conditions made it tough for Lowcountry workers who work outdoors, especially this morning. It was a cold start to the day for bellman Matthew Carrington who works at the Francis Marion Hotel in downtown Charleston. “I’m from England originally so I’m used to cold weather but even this is a little bit cold for where I am from,” explained Carrington.
Construction workers had to battle the cold weather all across the Lowcountry.  “Today we are losing a few hours because we’re going to have to warm up so we can start laying some bricks,” said Eddie L. James of Jata Construction and Masonry. James’s crew was delayed this morning because the mortar for mason work doesn’t work below 32 degrees.
Firefighters had to battle the cold weather as well. The Mount Pleasant and Awendaw Fire Departments dealt with a house fire along Venning Road shortly before 7 o’clock Friday Morning.
“It’s been pretty bad this morning. Your hands are the first to feel it because that’s where the water is getting through your gloves and your face,” said Awendaw Battalion Chief Peter Rodgers.
