Charleston lawyer reinstated after jail time

The state Supreme Court has reinstated a lawyer who spent more than seven years in prison for killing a jogger on The Battery in Charleston while driving drunk.

Mark Evans was disbarred in 1996 after he pleaded guilty to felony drunken driving. The lawyer turned himself in to police three days after his car jumped a curb and hit Laura Griffin, who later died from head injuries.

In a ruling issued Monday, the justices noted this is the first time they’ve been asked to reinstate someone whose crime involved a death. But they ruled the seriousness of Evans’ crime should not prevent him from practicing law after he’s turned his life around.

But they put conditions on their decision, and Evans must undergo two years of monitoring.

How can this be? If I had killed someone while driving drunk I might still be in prison. How can a convicted felon be licensed to practice law in South Carolina? I have no problems with someone turning their lives around and have the opportunity to make a living and support themselves. I also believe that everyone should be held to the same standards. I am thinking that with a felony conviction on my record that I could not work as a security officer in SC much less be a licensed attorney. I guess my assumptions are totaly wrong. Go figure.
