An anonymous tip led to the arrest of 28-year-old James Simpson, the man Charleston police say was caught on surveillance video running off with a painting from Hank’s Seafood on Hayne Street in Charleston.

Police said the painting was 6-feet by 8-feet and depicted an elderly man holding a grouper and a fishing pole and was valued at 25-thousand dollars. It was located on the wall just inside the front door of Hank’s.

Police found the painting in an apartment at 439 1/2 King Street above Juanita Greenberg’s restaurant. Simpson was taken into custody across the street from the restaurant at Chai’s.

Police said the restaurant manager told them that the painting was stolen just after 11:30 pm on Sunday.

The restaurant was open to a private party at the time.

The surveillance video, taking in a parking garage at 200 Meeting Street, shows the thief carrying the stolen painting.
