Powder that was found at UPS center… not enough airborne to cause great harm

UPDATE 6 3:56 PM Berkeley County Director of Emergency Preparedness tells us that Calcium Phosphate Dibasic can, like many powders, be dangerous if a great quantity is airborne.  He tells us that fortunately that is NOT the case today.  He said the powder was only found as high up as 18 inches from the bottom of the trailer. 

UPDATE 5 1:22 PM UPS hub in Summerville back to normal operations, and Farmington Road is reopened, after hazmat teams identified the substance that sickened a worker as Calcium Phosphate Dibasic.

We will have complete coverage of the incident tonight on News 2 at 5 & 6.

UPDATE 4 1:04 PM: Hazmat teams say Calcium Phosphate Dibasic sickened an employee working in a shipping container. Farmington Road, from Hwy 17-A to Berkeley Road is still closed.

UPDATE 3 10:26 AM: 60 responders & 45 employees are now in the hot zone.. The Hazmat team is preparing to go inside and collect a sample of the substance. Representatives of the joint terrorism task force are now on the scene, as well.

We will have a live shot from the scene on News 2 Midday, at 11:00am.

UPDATE 2 9:05 AM: According to an AP report;  Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Thom Berry said the Berkeley County complex was evacuated Thursday morning after an employee complained of difficulty breathing and skin and eye irritation. The employee had been working inside a shipping container.

Berry said a powder found inside the container is being examined.

UPDATE 1 8:33 AM: News 2 is on the scene of a suspicious package investigation at the UPS hub in Summerville.

According to our crew, officials say a package fell off a truck and is being treated as suspicious.

ORIGINAL STORY 6:58 AM: Fire and hazmat teams are investigating a suspicious substance at the UPS hub, and traffic in the area is shut down.

According to Berkeley County Fire officials, they evacuated the building are working to figure out what the substance is.

Farmington Road between Hwy 17-A and Berkeley Drive is closed.

60 responders, 45 employees are now in the hot zone, hazmat team is preparing to go inside and collect a sample of the substance. Representatives of the joint terrorism task force are now on the scene, as well.

We have a crew headed that way and will update this story as soon as we get more information.
