BREAKING NEWS UPDATE 3: Fire at Stratford High School

*2:30 pm update*

Here’s a statement from the City of Goose Creek about the Stratford High School fire:

“At 6:55 AM, the City of Goose Creek Fire Department received a call reporting a fire on the roof of the gymnasium at Stratford High School located at 951 Crowfield Blvd.

The first fire units arrived in two minutes and observed a small fire burning at the top of the roof line on the corner of the gymnasium located towards the rear of the campus.  The school had been evacuated upon the arrival of the Fire Department and the students were isolated outside of the building in front of the school.  At no time were any students in any danger.  The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was contained to one corner of the roof area of the gymnasium.

Goose Creek Fire Chief Steve Chapman said, “The school had an emergency action plan in place and implemented it immediately upon discovery of the fire.  The students were cooperative and followed instructions.  I give a lot of credit to the school administrators and staff for remaining calm and following their emergency plan.”  The fire was contained to the roof covering the materials on the building and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.“

Crews worked Wednesday morning to put out a on the roof of the gymnasium at Stratford High School. 

There was a construction crew working on some roof repairs, but school officials can’t say if that is the cause.

At the time classes started, some students were still outside of the building.

Berkeley County School’s public information officer Pam Bailey, says the fire was isolated and students are allowed in the building at this time.
