Facebook & Twitter fanatics: Useless updates
Published: October 1, 2009
Are you getting annoyed at your friends on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook? The seemingly endless number of trivial status updates may be driving people apart instead of bringing them together.
We got an inside look at a Facebook fanatic.
Brittney Daniels, Facebook Fanatic - “See if I can get something going.“
Debbie Sheetz, Facebook Fanatic - “If you don’t have Facebook, you’re not cool.“
That’s right, Daniels has posted nearly 1400 pictures on her Facebook page.
Sheetz - “I just get caught up in stalking. I don’t know.“
“Most people are facebook stalkers they just won’t admit to it.“
Debbie thrives off the voyeuristic nature of scouring her friends Facebook updates.
Daniels - “Sometimes it’s all about me.“
While Britney prefers posting… And posting a lot.
Daniels - “I love being lazy and watching tv all night. So much fun.“
Some Facebookers and Tweeters call the prolific posting narcissistic.
Daniels - “You’re letting others know where you are, what you’re doing, how you look.“
Others call it annoying.
Perrin Walker, Facebook User - “It’s a little redundant.“
With unwanted consequences.
Walker, - “We talk on the phone less. We see each other less.“
Daniels - “I think it’s a game we all like to play knowing that other people are looking at you and want to know about you.“
But psychologists fear the game is a favorite for people with short attention spans.
Edward Richards, Psychotherapist - “People are so unwilling to have quiet time and sit and meditate and think.“
And as for all those trivial, sometimes useless updates.
Walker - “I don’t care if you’re taking a shower, that’s your own personal business.“
Some Psychotherapists say not to comment on the udpates! They advise not to reward the bad behavior that, at least for some, is too fun to quit.
Daniels - “Sometimes on one status we could have 30 comments and the whole time we are laughing or cracking up.“
