Press Release: In the time it takes to read this report, at least two strokes will have occurred, and at least one person will die from stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the leading cause of adult disability according to the National Stroke Association.

In recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month, Trident Health System will offer a

free stroke screening on Wednesday, May 6 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Summerville Medical Center

. Screenings will include lipid profile with glucose, blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference, heart and vascular disease risk assessment, counseling and education related to risk factors. Lipid profile will be available by appointment only.

Anyone can have a stroke; but, an individual’s chances for having a stroke increase if they meet certain criteria.  Some risk factors are beyond one’s control—those over age 55, male, African American, Hispanic or Asian/Pacific Islander, or those having a family history of stroke.  Other stroke risk factors are controllable which include: high blood pressure, tobacco use, high cholesterol and excessive weight.
