The FDA says 72 diet supplements sold in stores and over the internet are filled with hidden dangers.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration expanded its list of dangerous products warning people about high levels of prescription medications hidden in over the counter products.
Some of the supplements claim to be “natural” or to contain only herbal ingredients but actually contain hidden drugs that have not been approved for use in the United States.
In fact, FDA tests found anti-depressants, anti-seizure medicines, potent diuretics and one solution used in chemical experiments that’s a suspected cancer-causing agent and not approved for use in the United States.
“I think you’re better served using the products that are from established companies,“ said physician Dr. Eve Guth.
Companies that don’t use questionable ingredients.
The FDA reports Sibutramine for example, a controlled substance, was found in many of these products at levels much higher than the maximum daily dosage for Meridia, the only FDA-approved drug product containing Sibutramine.
The health risks can be very serious high blood pressure, heart attack, seizures and stroke.
The FDA says it’s working to pull the products with undeclared drugs from the market and may pursue criminal charges against some companies.
