Healthy food could help you lose weight and fight cancer.
That is the premise behind a free cooking class being offered near Dallas, Texas by Katherine Lawrence.
At 27 years-old Katherine was an Iraq war veteran, but it was on the homefront that she faced her toughest battle ever.
She said, “I started to have really bad pain in my abdomen and I found out I had severe endometriosis and uterine cysts and ovarian cysts. My doctor wanted to put me into early menopause and then schedule me for a hysterectomy.“
Desperate to avoid that, Katherine started eating a low-fat vegan diet. In just five short weeks, her health problems were all but gone.
Now she teaches cooking classes to help prevent and battle cancer in conjunction with a non-profit group called The Cancer Project.
Faith Winder turned to the classes in hopes of finding a healthier way to cook for her family.
She said, “I noticed that my boys were eating a lot of sweets and I was just feeding them things that I was raised to eat, but I didn’t feel like it was healthy.“
In the class, students are armed with the information they need to make better decisions at the grocery store.
“I feel totally empowered now. I know what it’s going to do to my family. I know how it’s going to affect my family,“ Faith Winder said.
And with recipes like spicy veggie wraps or guiltless chocolate mousse, they may never even suspect it’s good for them.
