Stocks settle mixed

Stock prices bounced off their lows of the session to close mixed.
The Dow fell 25 points to 8,448.
The S&P was up 1 and a-half points points to 871. And the Nasdaq composite was up more than 7 points at 1,546. On the broader market, advancing issues outnumbered decliners by an 8 to 7 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.
Volume came to 4.9 billion shares on the NYSE. Nasdaq stock market volume came to 2 billion shares.
