The Citadel to Face South Carolina in 100th Meeting

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Bulldog Basketball team will finish 2008 with a visit to Columbia, S.C., where they will face the Gamecocks of South Carolina. The Bulldogs will take on the Gamecocks in the Colonial Life Arena on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. Fans can catch the action on SportSouth or ESPN360.

The Citadel (5-6) comes into the game after falling to No. 19/22 Michigan State, 79-65, in East Lansing, Mich. on Wednesday night. Austin Dahn led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Cameron Wells contributed 14 points and Bryan Streeter collected a season-high of 10 points.

Wells leads the Bulldogs in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. The sophomore is averaging 15.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals. Demetrius Nelson is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.3 points and 5.2 rebounds.

South Carolina (7-1) enters the game on a three-game winning streak after defeating North Carolina Central, 90- 43, on Tuesday night. Devan Downey leads the Gamecocks in scoring, assists and steals, averaging 20 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 steals. Mike Holmes leads the team on the boards with 8.6. South Carolina has four players averaging in double-figures in scoring.

Saturday night’s game will mark the 100th meeting between the two teams. South Carolina leads the series with a 23-76 advantage. The last time the two teams met was on November 12, 2007 in Columbia, S.C., where the Gamecocks defeated the Bulldogs, 103-42. Nelson scored 16 points, while Wells collected 11.
