State issues grilling guidelines to protect your family

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Summer is in full swing, and South Carolina’s agriculture officials want to make sure you’re safe when grilling outside.
   
South Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers says Palmetto State residents firing up their grills this summer should make sure they handle all food safely.
   
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service offers “drills of the grill” for anyone with questions about handling and preparation of meat and poultry.
   
Officials advise cooking food to a safe minimum internal temperature and setting up smokers in well-lit, well-ventilated areas.
