H1N1 flu prompts CDC to change pneumonia shot recommendations

Because of the threat of H1N1 flu, the Centers for Disease Control has changed its recommendations on who should get the pneumonia shot.

Between the pneumonia shot, the seasonal flu shot and the upcoming swine flu shot ... what shots should you get?

Jennifer James-Mesloh from the Lee County, Florida Health Department says that this year, many more of us will learn about the pneumonia shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults 65 and older—and now all smokers—get the shot.

“What happens with H1N1/swine flu is that disease gets in the lungs and it replicates,“ said James-Mesloh. “So anyone that is smoking is more at risk for any kind of respiratory complication than someone who is not a smoker.“

Even if you hate needles, you don’t need to be that afraid of the pneumonia shot. Unlike the seasonal flu shot you need every year, you only need the pneumonia shot once in your lifetime.“

James-Mesloh said, “This is something that can help you to protect yourself.“

But don’t forget, there’s still the seasonal flu shot, and next month the swine flu shot should be available.

James-Mesloh said it can be overwhelming to see three shots, but that it’s really pretty simple: Everyone 65 and older should get the seasonal flu shot.

And when its ready, some of the groups the CDC wants to get the swine flu shot includes pregnant women and anyone six months old to 24 years old.

Health care workers and people caring for infants 6 months of age and younger are also recommended to get the H1N1 vaccine.
