The governor of Louisiana is appealing for more food, water, ice and tarps as the state contends with the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.

Nearly two million people fled their homes last weekend as the Category Two storm approached in the Gulf. Friday was homecoming day for many of them.

Balloons and welcome signs decorated the train station in New Orleans. Soldiers at a National Guard distribution point loaded up cars with ice and
nonperishable food packages for returnees, all of them eager to see it their places were damaged.

In Houma (HOH’-muh), Louisiana, near where Gustav made landfall, authorities let people back in to get a look but encouraged them to leave before the nighttime curfew. As of Friday, nearly 700,000 homes and businesses in Louisiana still didn’t have power. Governor Bobby Jindal says it could be weeks before it’s all back on.
