There’s bad news for drivers at the pump, AAA says prices are up 47 cents from last month. That’s a 58% jump from January 1st. But one California man has
come up with a new way to save money on gas. It’s a way to pay today prices tomorrow.
Visit your local gas station, and you’ll notice prices heading skyward.
Luis Matallana - Driver - “The economic situation is so bad but prices seem to start going up.“
A double whammy for drivers like Luis Matallana.
Matallana - “The situation’s not getting any better so actually stuff like this doesn’t help.“
So what do you do?
Matallana - “Get an extra job or something, waiting at night, waiting, I don’t know. It’s getting pretty bad.“
Edward Lee knows the helpless feeling watching rising gas prices.
Edward Lee - Petrofix - “And you see it going up and psychologically it’s a big drain.“
So he and a friend put th eir economics degrees together and started an online business called “Petrofix”.
Lee - “It’s a service that allows you to contain gas prices and control your budget, so if gas prices rise we compensate you the difference.“
Here’s how it works: you estimate how many gallons of gas you’ll use in a month. You lock in a price, and pay a small fee per gallon.  If the average gas price goes up, the company pays you back.
Lee - “Essentially what we’re doing is we’re going to an exchange and purchasing essentially what are these gas price caps.“
Think of it as sort of an insurance policy for fuel. It’s similar to a plan Southwest Airlines uses to lock in gas prices before they go up.
Lee - “If gas prices go up you don’t need to make the hard decisions like, ‘How am I going to pay this bill or that bill.“
Lee says Petrofix is aimed at small businesses and consumers, the people hurt most by pain at the pump. And as gas prices climb, it’s one way to stay on the ground floor. Lee says when prices go down, drivers simply pay the lower price.
